Operating Emergency Vehicles
- 1/15If you are operating an emergency vehicle
Emergency vehicle drivers are allowed to pass signals and signs during response, provided both sound and light signals are used and safety is maintained.
When responding with lights and sirens
According to Oman traffic regulations, sirens and flashing lights must be used together to alert others and gain right-of-way during emergency movement.
At red lights or stop signs
Red lights can be passed only if warning devices are active and it is safe to proceed, minimizing risk to others.
If other drivers do not yield
Even if others fail to give way, emergency drivers must avoid risking injury or damage,
When using sirens and flashing lights
Misuse of sirens or lights without actual emergency need is prohibited and may result in penalties.
If the road is congested
In traffic jams, emergency vehicles must use audible signals sparingly and navigate slowly between lanes, ensuring no collision risk.
At pedestrian crossings or school zones
Even during emergencies, you must slow significantly near crossings and school areas to prevent harm to vulnerable road users.
If responding in poor weather or low visibility
In fog, rain, or sandstorms, reduce speed and activate fog lamps, headlights, and sirens to increase visibility to others.
When arriving at a crash or fire scene
Emergency vehicles must be positioned to protect the scene but not obstruct access for other responders or vehicles.
If a vehicle is blocking your path
Do not force unsafe overtakes. Use horns/lights to alert the driver and wait for a clear space to proceed without endangering others.
When operating a police or rescue motorcycle
Even in emergencies, riders must wear helmets and protective gear. Speed must be controlled, especially in urban or slippery areas.
If a non-emergency driver follows closely
Civilian drivers are not permitted to follow emergency vehicles. Maintain focus and report dangerous tailgating if it endangers your path.
When driving to or from a hospital with a patient
Avoid abrupt movements that could harm the patient. Use warning devices as needed but maintain safe and controlled driving.
At railway crossings during response
Emergency vehicles must still stop at rail crossings. Do not cross until tracks are fully clear, even during urgent response.
If your vehicle becomes disabled during response
Turn on hazard lights, place warning triangles if safe, and radio dispatch for another unit to take over the emergency call.
