Inspection and Maintenance
- 1/25If you are driving a commercial vehicle
As per Oman law, commercial vehicle drivers must carry out daily checks to ensure roadworthiness. Fines apply if defects are not identified or reported.
At the start of each work shift
Before driving, inspect tires, brakes, lights, mirrors, and load security. It is the driver legal responsibility to detect and report faults.
When inspecting brakes
For air brake vehicles, ensure pressure builds correctly, warning buzzers work, and emergency systems are functional. Faulty brakes must be repaired before use.
If tires appear underinflated or damaged
Oman law prohibits driving on unsuitable or mixed tires. Check for cuts, air pressure, and tread depth before departure.
When checking vehicle lights
Brake lights, low/high beams, hazard lights, and reflectors must be clean and functioning. Replace faulty bulbs before the trip.
At the rear of the vehicle
Ensure rear lights, license plate illumination, and reflectors are clean and functional. Secure the rear door and cargo area properly.
If a mirror is cracked or misaligned
Mirrors are essential for blind spot monitoring. Damaged or misaligned mirrors must be repaired before operating the vehicle.
If your windshield wipers are streaking or missing
Effective wipers are required for visibility in dust or rain. Non-functional wipers are a safety hazard and must be replaced.
When engine fluids are low
Low engine oil, coolant, or brake fluid can lead to breakdowns. Always top up to safe levels and report any unusual fluid loss.
At the fuel inspection point
During inspections, check for fuel leaks, loose tank covers, and signs of fuel seepage. Leaking fuel can cause fire and fines.
If air brakes are equipped
Ensure the air pressure builds to the correct level. Warning buzzers and emergency brakes must be tested during pre-trip checks.
When checking suspension
Faulty suspension can affect steering and braking. Check leaf springs, shocks, and bushings for cracks, leaks, or looseness.
If steering feels loose during checks
Loose steering can result in delayed response or loss of control. Do not drive until the system is inspected and repaired.
At vehicle startup
Watch for warning lights and listen for knocking or grinding sounds. Report any irregularities before moving the vehicle.
When performing tire checks
Tires must have sufficient tread depth 1.6 mm minimum and no bulges or cracks. Check with a gauge and inspect all around the tire.
If you notice engine noise or vibration
Unusual knocking, rattling, or vibration should be reported immediately. Continuing to drive may cause engine damage or breakdown.
When trailer or cargo is involved
Ensure the trailer is properly hitched, safety chains are attached, and the cargo is evenly distributed and secured to prevent shifting.
At the vehicle interior
Interior safety systems must work properly. Defective indicators, seatbelts, or horns must be fixed before starting a trip.
If fire extinguisher or emergency equipment is missing
Commercial vehicles must carry a fire extinguisher, warning triangles, and first-aid kit. Missing safety gear is a violation.
If you find a fault during inspection
All defects found during pre-trip or post-trip inspection must be logged and corrected before the vehicle is used again.
When faults are reported to your company
Faults should be logged in the vehicle inspection report and followed up by maintenance staff before the next shift.
At inspection stations or enforcement checkpoints
Authorities may check logbooks, permits, and vehicle condition. Non-compliance may lead to fines or the vehicle being impounded.
When bulbs are burned out or dim
Faulty or dim lights affect visibility and signaling. They must be replaced to comply with road safety regulations.
When oil appears black or sludgy
Dark, thick oil indicates it is overdue for replacement. Driving with degraded oil can lead to engine damage.
If you smell fuel, rubber, or burning plastic
Unusual smells may signal fire risk, fluid leaks, or electrical failure. Stop in a safe area and investigate or report the issue.
